RIOT!!!

It's weird how I'm still kind of unnerved by riot police. I mean, you'd think I'd've gotten used to it by now. It's not like I don't see them every day, you know... in front of buildings or in and around the train station or whatever. However there are times, like today, when I really think it'd be nice to live and work somewhere where there aren't any. Or at least, any visible. Or maybe even any visible first thing in the morning.

So... give it a shot, plug your town here! State a case for me to move there.

Edit: Unless we're talking about the Caribbean, no, I don't want to live somewhere hot.

Edit 2: I'd also prefer that I live somewhere that I won't be hated for being weird. Because I am.

Austin, TX

Austin is cool, left-wing, hippy, and cheap to live. The economy is pretty good and jobs are to be had. The music scene is really good. It gets chilly enough to wear sweaters, but not coats.

Everyone I talk to about Austin says the same thing across the board! They love it there.

I lived in Austin for about three years. If I ever had to live in Texas again, I'd choose Austin.

It does have its drawbacks though, namely Cedar Fever and cricket season. And no, I don't mean that wacky English game.

Um. I really have nothing good to say. Y'like warm weather?

Portland, Oregon! You need to experience life on the West Coast for a while, it's all different here. Plus, you know, you can hang out with us a lot, and we're cool. Then we'll make Celia move here, since she needs to.

It was freakin' cold here this morning. Like -30. Froze my knees off.

Heather beat me to it! Portland is low-risk (Seattle, SF & LA are the big West Coast targets), low-crime, laid-back, we've got a great new mayor, and in the Metro area you won't be hated for being weird. Can't say the same about the rest of the state...but there's no sales tax (income tax instead). Minus? You can't pump your own damned gas, and it does rain a lot in the winter.

We'll form the Cool People Move to Portland group. My friend Devin says he encourages all liberals to move here. Now, if we can just get the fundies to move away...

You can't pump your own gas in NJ either, so no change for her there.

But you can't take the podling away from me!

Fremont! We never have riot police. We're not crowded like the rest of the Bay Area, and you can get a nice apartment for $965, and you can take the train into San Francisco.

Okay, so that rent prices is going to be a deal breaker for most people. *G*

Madison, WI. If you don't mind colder weather half the year (and living here, you must not), it is beatiful and educated. There are a plethora of outstanding restaurants of all discription, a concern for local well being, and and awesome farmers market around the caoital on Saturday mornings.
In 2000, Nader won substantially more votes in Madison than Bush. There were also like to protest there, but the police/citizen interaction is always respectful. The only protests I was involoved in where there were issues were during the National Governors Assoc. Convention when they had National Guard troops come in. And there was that time we got pepperspray because someone set fire to an Army recruting center's pamphlets. But I like it there anyway.
Though I hear good things about Auten and Ann Arbor MI.

Metuchen is nice. But I'm guessing you don't want to live here. I get the impression you're looking for a bigger change in scenery.

I'll chime in with the person who suggested Portland, Oregon, though. I was there once, and it was really nice. It's a somewhat college-like mildly bohemian town (and it's home to LiveJournal). The surroundings are also nice: Multinomah falls, wine country to the south.

Matwan has that whole shark eating people thing.

I think I need to rephrase that.

There was a shark that swam up a creek and ate some people. And it became famous. Plus, we're near Sandy Hook and Cheesequake Park. How can you not want to be near a park with cheese in the name?

Philadelphia, PA -- it's the town that rocked the nation! :)

The cops here still suck, but rarely break out the riot gear (well, at least not on a daily basis). And it has me!
