Subliminal Squirrel & Kayaks!
Apr. 1st, 2003 01:48 pmSo I have a kayak! Paddlesport was a definite success for me. I now have a beautiful sit-on-top from wilderness systems and so cannot wait to get out in it! Actually, I really can't wait to surf on it. Like really really really! And I was sensible (for once) and got thigh straps and a paddle leash with it. Yes!!! It's so pretty too. Really. I so want to go out on it. Man-o-man!!!
And in between the fun of Paddlesport there was scenic design. Two weeks ago I get a call from a guy at a local community theater (where I'd helped out at christmas) asking if I wanted to do some set stuff for the kids show they're doing ('winnie the pooh'). Now of course I said hell yeah! I love having a project to work on. And so I did paint for many hours, employing some minions in the process (hi minions! very helpful and talented minions they are too) and lo it did come out well. People were *amazed* by it!!! So freaky! I was all, "yeah, but anyone could do this" but apparently I'm wrong about that. So who knows, maybe I'll be in demand after this one. I've got one to do in August already.
So some cool things about this one... firstly, I painted a subliminal squirrel on one of the trees. If you look for it you can see it, but otherwise it's really hard to notice. Secondly, and this is pretty cool, only from about 4 or 5 seats in the theater there's an optical illusion that the two flats are actually one, with a tree crossing them. Think like when you first go into the Labyrinth and there're openings you can't see. Like that.
So the director is very happy with it. The other people at the theater are all impressed and stuff. Many complimentary things were said. I feel almost, like, talented. Cool beans! Yeah!
It was a long weekend... but sooooo much fun!

Date: 2003-04-01 11:56 am (UTC)I used to do set painting and design, I really enjoyed it. I did a whole set of bookcases once that I painted all of the individual books on. I had my own secret amusement in coming up with book titles. They were finally noticed by the cast and the crew. My favorite set was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Coat because I got to do all sorts of huge Egyptian paintings and heiroglyphics.

Date: 2003-04-02 06:32 am (UTC)But yeah, the woods were fun to paint. I made a weeping willow. The director absolutely loves it! Of course, then I was all, "Well, you know, that's a wetlands tree, so perhaps this other tree can't go next to it..." and everyone just stared at me until I said, "Hi, I have a plant science degree from Cook." And then it was pointed out that not many botanists would be in the audience, most likely. Hee.
