So I often look at odd news and opinions on various news sites. And I often
come across things that are interesting. But this one... well, this one [livejournal.com profile] dreadpiratetait wanted me to post. So anyway, here we go, a commentary
on Star
Trek and pedophiles
. Anyway, I found it interesting...

Well...holy crap.

They're going at it from a really odd angle though. I mean, they're assuming Trekkie = original Star Trek (well, I suppose it might, I don't know about fandoms); most of their points wouldn't apply to the more recent series and spinoffs.
And is it more about what a pedophile thinks a child might be interested in?
And really, it sounds damn unlikely to me... sounds more urban myth than anything, though I guess weirder things have turned out to be true

Yeah, I had a lot of the same thoughts, although I was just watching the first seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and noticed similar things about the characters' sexuality (a lot of sex seems to happen either under the control of aliens or on the holodeck). But yeah, it really does kind of smack of urban myth.

Yes, though on NG and other ST spin-offs there are genuine romantic attachments - Troy and Riker, for a start - against which to measure the others, which seem to be more parables about manipulation or foolishness. I wonder what percentage of the non-paedophilic population are Trekkers? It's odd, though, that my father never mentioned it - he was Juvenile Liason for years, and ran many a child abuse investigation, and never once did he mention an overwhelming trait other than a tendency for paedophiles to be white, middle-aged, middle class men who had relationship problems and usually been abused themselves.

Fascinating.

Because it had to be said.

well, geez. at least i can say i didn't really watch TOS that much.

i had the same utopian thoughts before they got to it in the article. maybe they wished they could act as "utopian" as the crew does. i wonder how much other fantasy/scifi stuff these people are into, or if it's just star trek.

That is a really good point.

The thing is that ST is so well known that it is the most obvious place to start looking - everyone knows someone who is socially backward and a trek fan. They are just looking for people like them. The whole pedophile thing seems more like "I know I can find lonely kids at these events" to me.

The writer . . . seems unable to understand the content of the show as opposed to the events that happen in an episode. "The Enterprise is a beautiful lady" bit, for example, was not mentioned seriously but in the context of trying to drive the androids crazy by acting illogically.

The rest . . . corelation, something, something, causation.
