Does it seem right to anyone that it's cheaper to take summer classes at NYU than it is to take them at Rutgers?

That's what I'm saying. I've got the NYU catalog at home, and I'm debating taking 2 classes. One is in publishing, which is only at NYU... $595, though I don't think it's a credit class.

Fine, but the other one I could take at Rutgers, so I decided to compare. It's an Italian language class. At NYU it's $505 (and they have an accelerated 1 & 2 for that price as well). At Rutgers it's $235.50/credit for in-state people, so it would be $706.50. And I'm not including registration fees for either, though I'm pretty sure NYU charges less than the $110 that Rutgers does. Seriously, WTF?

Part of me is really hoping I read it wrong, but I'm thinking not.

ps. I'd also like to take a class at NYU on how to be a film critic, but I don't think I could manage that. Hee.

I suspect that Rutgers does a pretty brisk business in summer classes for students making up transfer credits and the like. That's probably why it's so expensive. But still! $700???

Summer session at Rutgers is actually offered through the University College, which has a standing rate of $235/credit hour in-state. The reason summer classes are so expensive is that the university college makes no differentiation between fall, spring, and summer semester classes. Essentially you're paying full-rate non-matriculated costs for each credit.

One of my friends told me it's because Rutgers is better than NYU academically... I find that odd.

To save a couple hundred dollars, I'd rather go to NYU (besides which I would always be on time at NYU). Now I just need to decide which sessions I want to take, and whether I want to take accelerated 1 & 2 or just part 1 for Italian.
